New Delhi [India], January 29 (ANI): Highlighting New Delhi's unique diplomatic position, Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr Varsen Aghabekian Shahin on Thursday described India as an 'important player' capable of mediating the ongoing conflict due to its friendly ties with both Israel and Palestine.
Speaking to ANI, Dr Shahin emphasised that India's commitment to international law makes it a credible voice in pushing for a peaceful resolution.
Shahin underscored the significance of the India-Arab forum as a platform for addressing regional stability, particularly the situation in Palestine.
'This is an important forum because it brings India and the Arab countries together. India is an important player, and we believe that several aspects of that conflict, alongside other important issues, will be discussed around the table,' she said.
Stressing India's potential as a mediator, she added, 'I think India is placed to venture into a role that brings both sides together because it's a friend of Israel and it's a friend of the Palestinians and it's a believer in international law. So that stance is important in pushing things in the right direction.'
The Palestinian Foreign Minister noted that while Palestine recognises Israel's legitimacy, the focus must now shift toward global recognition of a Palestinian state.
'Israel is legitimate. It has been recognised by the state of Palestine. Today I want to legitimise Palestine, and India can help in that direction,' Dr. Shahin stated.
Addressing the 'Board of Peace' initiative discussed at the United Nations, Dr. Shahin confirmed that Palestine has embraced the venture as a pathway toward sovereignty and self-determination.
'We have embraced it because it stipulates what needs to be done in the second stage, simply the humanitarian assistance, the opening of the border crossings and in the final analysis, maybe taking us to the path of a sovereign Palestinian state,' she said.
Reiterating Palestine's stance on regional disputes, the Minister called for a return to the negotiating table, condemning the use of force.
'Our message is very clear. Any disputes or border issues between nations need to be solved as per international law and around a negotiating table. No other form will bring any country closer to peace. We would condemn any form of violence,' Shahin concluded. (ANI)
