Some 17 vehicles got torched at a dealership outside Rome in the latest global string of attacks on the company
A Tesla dealership outside Rome was hit by a major fire early on Monday, with at least 17 cars destroyed and the shed where they were parked suffering considerable damage.
Thus far, local police have neither apprehended any suspects nor named the potential motives behind it. According to Italian media reports, the investigators are working with several theories, including an arson.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, however, unequivocally condemned the incident as "terrorism," effectively linking it to the continuing string of protests, as well as violent attacks on the facilities linked to his car company, and individual private vehicles. While the anti-Tesla violence was initially confined to the US, the attacks have promptly spread globally.
A Tesla dealership was vandalized in Berlin on Monday, when activists from environmentalist Neue Generation (New Generation) group spray painted the entrance into the facility. Another German Tesla dealership, located in the northern city of Verden, made the headlines over the weekend, when seven vehicles got burnt down there. An investigation into the fire is still ongoing and local authorities refrained from speculating on its cause.
Last week, the FBI launched a task force to address the growing number of violent incidents related to Tesla. In the US, the string of attacks, which include vandalism and arson, have been officially designated as "domestic terrorism," FBI Director Kash Patel warned, vowing to punish those behind the incidents.
"The FBI has been investigating the increase in violent activity toward Tesla, and over the last few days, we have taken additional steps to crack down and coordinate our response," Patel wrote in a post on X. "This is domestic terrorism. Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice."
No stranger to controversy before, Musk became an increasingly polarizing figure lately over his close ties to US President Donald Trump and his work as the head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a body tasked with slashing the US government spending. Since January, dozens of Tesla-linked locations have been hit by demonstrations, with Musk suggesting the campaign could be a coordinated effort bankrolled by major Democratic donors, including enigmatic billionaire George Soros.
US President Trump has condemned the attacks, suggesting harsh penalties, and even threatening to send those found guilty to serve up to 20 years in the notorious mega prison in El Salvador.
