NICOSIA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Greek and Turkish communities of Cyprus have reached a rare agreement that will make the introduction of 5G technology possible on their separate parts of the Mediterranean island, the UN mission in Nicosia said on Friday.
A statement by UNFICYP, the United Nations peacekeeping force operating in Cyprus, said that the agreement was reached during talks within a joint committee which lasted almost two years.
Separate providers will introduce 5G mobile telephony in the Greek and Turkish parts of Cyprus, but the agreement was necessary as it involves the removal of TV broadcasting from the 700 MHz frequency band.
The UN statement said that analogue broadcasting will be transitioned to digital "with the support of the European Union, allowing the allocation of the 700 MHz frequency band to 5G mobile services."
Greek and Turkish Cypriots have lived in separate parts of Cyprus since a 1974 military action by Turkey.
Crossing of the military buffer zones was allowed in 2003, meaning people from the two communities could meet again.
