Ninth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece pulled off an upset in the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi WTA Women's Tennis Open on Monday, defeating top-seeded Sofia Kenin in three sets.
The other quarterfinal winners were fourth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Veronika Kudermetova of Russia. All four quarterfinal matches went three sets.
After dropping the opening set, Sakkari stormed back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory. Kenin was unable to convert on three break points in the first game of the second set and was eventually broken on her final two service games of the set. Sakkari lost just two points on her serve in the third set to finish off the victory.
Kudermetova pulled off a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) upset victory over second-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. In the tightly contested match, Kudermetova had an 11-4 advantage on aces.
Sabalenka advanced to face Sakkari in the semifinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. Kostyuk will face Kudermetova for a chance to reach the final after a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.
