JERUSALEM, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Greek side Panathinaikos 89-81 in the 16th round of basketball's EuroLeague on Tuesday evening.
The Israeli hosts achieved their seventh victory of the campaign to date, while Panathinaikos remain with five wins from 15 games after a game that was played behind closed doors at the Menorah Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv.
The home team dominated the first quarter and took a 21-12 lead into the first break, mainly thanks to some aggressive defensive play.
Points by Omri Casspi inspired Maccabi to increase their lead to 35-19 in the 17th minute, before Nemanja Nedovic helped Panathinaikos reduce their deficit to 41-30 at half-time.
The Greek side continued to cut the gap, as an 8-0 run brought them within four points of Maccabi, but the home team stretched their lead to 59-52 at the end of the third quarter.
Panathinaikos reduced the gap to 75-73 with four minutes to go thanks to a phenomenal shooting performance by Nedovic, but Scottie Wilbekin's crucial points secured the win for Maccabi.
Wilbekin scored a team-high 22 points, and Othello Hunter and Elijah Bryant added 13 points each for Maccabi.
Nedovic led Panathinaikos scorers with a game-high 39 points, with Ben Bentil adding nine more.
Maccabi's next game is at home to Russia's Zenit Saint Petersburg on December 29, while Panathinaikos will face Red Star Belgrade in Serbia the following evening.
