Andrew Landry recovered from a few late mistakes and held off a spirited charge by Mexico's Abraham Ancer to win The American Express on Sunday in La Quinta, Calif.
Three straight bogeys on the back nine wiped out Landry's five-stroke lead, leaving him tied with Ancer as he approached the 17th tee, but he finished birdie-birdie to win by two. Landry shot 5-under 67 on the day, putting him at 26-under 262 for the tournament.
Playing four groups ahead of Landry, Ancer put the pressure on with a round of 63, racking up all nine of his birdies in the final 15 holes. The last was a 25-foot putt at the par-3 17th to get to 24 under.
As Ancer charged, Landry suddenly hit trouble. Sitting at 27-under par following three straight birdies to start the back nine, Landry bogeyed 13, 14 and 15, then missed a seven-foot birdie putt at the par-5 16th.
But he bounced back by putting his tee shot at 17 within seven feet and drained the birdie putt. Landry then hit his approach at the par-4 18th to six feet. With two putts to win, he sunk the 6-footer for his second career PGA Tour title.
Landry, 32, nearly won the same event in 2018, falling in a playoff to Spain's Jon Rahm. His only PGA Tour victory came later that year at the Valero Texas Open.
Finishing one back of Ancer in third was Scottie Scheffler, who began the day tied with Landry at 21 under. Scheffler was 2 over through six holes, then bounced back with two birdies but could manage only an eagle over the final 10 holes.
Bud Cauley (who shot 65) and Austria's Sepp Straka (66) tied for fourth at 20 under.
The final round was played at the Stadium Course, after the first three rounds had players rotating at the Stadium Course, the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club.
